Bathroom Remodel : Brooklyn, New York

This pink and dated bathroom was full of potential. The remodel would involve gutting the entire space and replacing all the plaster walls with moister resistant sheetrock and floor to ceiling ceramic tile. The main focus would be to transform the shower into a brighter, more inviting space...and of course replacing all of the bathroom's dated fixtures. .

The Issue:

  • Pink and dated
  • Old cast-iron tub
  • Flush-o-meter toilet
  • Claustrophobic shower

The Mission:

  • To convert this pink dated original into a modern, pleasant space with stylish fixtures and a custom frameless shower enclosure.

The Design:

Glossy, light-colored, 12 x 16 wall tiles were placed in a horizontal orientation from floor to ceiling while a dark glass and stone mosaic serves as an ascent. A matching 12 x 12 tile was used on the bathroom floor while the shower floor boasts a beautiful basket-weave pattern. A clear, 3/8 inch thick, frameless shower enclosure would be the center piece of the space which features a ceiling-mounted rain shower head, along with a handheld unit and a main pulsating shower head. A frameless, recessed medicine cabinet was added along with recessed lights, a beautiful dark-wood vanity, a vessel sink, a slow-close Toto toilet, and a new Kohler cast-iron tub which completes this beautiful transformation.

The Construction:

The bathroom was completely gutted. The old plumbing for the cast-iron tub was replaced and now features an easy to use pop-up drain. New copper tubing was installed for the shower supply lines which would support separate showerhead, rain shower head and a hand-held unit. A shower pan was installed and covered with cement and pitched toward the square shower drain. The 1 inch water line for the flush-o-meter toilet was converted to ½ inch copper tube with an angle valve which allowed for a regular tank & bowl toilet installation. A GFI outlet was added for functionality and the existing light fixture was changed. Recessed lighting was added. Cement board was used for the walls in the shower area while moisture resistant sheetrock was installed everywhere else. The floor was removed down to the beams. A ¾ inch plywood subfloor was added. Then it was cemented and leveled and the ceramic tiles installed. See the "before" and "after" transformation in the photos shown above.
