Bathroom Remodel : Forest Hills, New York

This bathroom remodel called for a conversion from a cast-iron tub to a custom ceramic shower. The original space was untouched since the 1960's. It was certain that the remodel would call for a complete gut renovation.

The Issue:

  • Outdated
  • Old cast-iron tub
  • Old plumbing
  • Inadequate electric

The Mission:

  • To convert this outdated bathroom to a modern space with a custom ceramic shower.

The Design:

Glossy, beige-colored, 12 x 16 wall tiles were placed in a horizontal orientation from floor to ceiling while a gold mosaic serves as an ascent at the mid-point and upper third of the wall. A matching 13 x 13 tile was used on the bathroom floor. A recessed ceramic shelf and a foldable shower seat were installed in the shower. A clear, 3/8 inch thick, frameless shower door was used to convey a feeling of space. A traditional vanity with brushed nickel fixtures and a frameless, recessed, medicine cabinet completes the design.

The Construction:

The bathroom was completely gutted. The old plumbing for the cast-iron tub was removed and replaced with a 2 inch waste-line which is required by code for shower stalls. A lead shower pan was installed and covered with cement and pitched toward the shower drain. The recessed shelf was framed and covered with cement board. Blocking was installed to support the foldable shower seat. A GFI outlet was added for functionality and the existing light fixture was changed. Cement board was used for the walls in the shower area while moisture resistant sheetrock was installed everywhere else. The floor was cemented and leveled and the ceramic tiles installed. See the "before" and "after" transformation in the photo shown above.
